• 25 October 2002, Senator Wellstone dies in plane crash, initial thoughts that icing was a likely culprit.
  • "Although they had been warned of icing conditions, the pilots had reported no problems before the crash".
  • Eight people -- including two pilots and three Wellstone staff members -- were killed when the twin-engine, propeller-driven King Air A-100 went down in a swampy North Woods forest on a near-freezing day of lowering clouds and icy drizzle.
• 12 December 1985, DC8 crash in Gander, Newfoundland kills 248 U.S. soldiers returning home for Christmas.
  • 5 members of the Canadian board that investigated the crash concluded that icing on the wings caused the chartered DC-8 to crash about 20 seconds after takeoff, killing the soldiers and the eight-member crew
  • During take-off from Gander, the aircraft crashed and burned approximately one-half mile off the departure end of runway 22. All 256 passengers and crew sustained fatal injuries.
• 31 October 1994, 68 die when American Eagle Aerospatial ATR-72-200 crashes in Roselawn, Indiana due to wing icing.
  • Flight 4184 was in a holding pattern in icing conditions, when it suddenly rolled over and dove into the ground. Ice, forming on the airframe, and in particular, aft of the deicing boots which are located on the leading edge of the wings, was the cause of the sudden rollover.
• 13 January 1982, 5 survive the crash of Air Florida B737 which plunged into the Potomac striking 14th ST. bridge.
  • Wheaton decided to use the hot exhaust from the preceeding DC-9's engines to melt the snow off the wings, which in the end only had the effect of pushing it to the trailing portion of the wing to refreeze. The aircraft's anti-ice system was unable to de-ice this portion of the wing.

In the nearly two decades that I've operated either Army or Air Force aircraft, I've been in a few iced up aircraft and I've lost a few friends in iced up aircraft. I've flown everything from VIPs to SpecOps teams in many countries. The one thing that always could cancel a mission very quickly was hazardous weather, and nothing was worse than icing in solid IMC.
